PRACTICAL POS GUIDE · KENYABarcode scanning for salon POS in Kenya
This guide to barcode scanning for salon explains the daily checks. Use barcode scanning to select the correct salon selling unit. Test Wash & style and Braiding service separately before relying on a scanner at the counter.
Barcode scanning for salon: start with the label, not the scanner
Create fixed service items such as a wash or a defined styling service, and keep retail hair products as separate stocked items.
Service codes can speed selection of a defined charge. Scanning a service code does not open a job card or reserve an appointment.
A scanner acceptance sheet
| Action | Expected result |
|---|---|
| Scan Wash & style once | One unit of Wash & style, at its configured price |
| Scan Wash & style again | Two units of Wash & style |
| Scan Braiding service | A separate Braiding service line |
| Scan an unknown label | Stop and identify the item; do not substitute silently |
| Submit after a test scan | No accidental checkout or duplicate charge |
Set up a practical test
- Connect a compatible scanner that types into the barcode field.
- Focus the barcode field before scanning and check where the characters appear.
- Check the scanner suffix; an Enter key should select the intended item without completing an unintended action.
- Test a damaged label and an unknown code using sample records.
- On Android, verify camera scanning on the actual browser and device; availability is device-dependent.
Read the result before adding quantity
Check the displayed name, unit and price after scanning Wash & style. A successful beep means the scanner read characters; it does not prove the selected item, configured price or entered stock is correct. Use a fresh basket when testing Braiding service so the results are easy to distinguish.
