Barcode scanning for homeware POS in Kenya

This guide to barcode scanning for homeware explains the daily checks. Use barcode scanning to select the correct homeware selling unit. Test Dinner plate and Cooking pot separately before relying on a scanner at the counter.

Barcode scanning for homeware: start with the label, not the scanner

Keep material, size and pack count visible for containers, utensils and household goods. A set of six must not be confused with one piece.

Check that each code resolves to one product and one selling unit. Two pack sizes should not be indistinguishable at checkout.

A scanner acceptance sheet

ActionExpected result
Scan Dinner plate onceOne unit of Dinner plate, at its configured price
Scan Dinner plate againTwo units of Dinner plate
Scan Cooking potA separate Cooking pot line
Scan an unknown labelStop and identify the item; do not substitute silently
Submit after a test scanNo accidental checkout or duplicate charge

Set up a practical test

  1. Connect a compatible scanner that types into the barcode field.
  2. Focus the barcode field before scanning and check where the characters appear.
  3. Check the scanner suffix; an Enter key should select the intended item without completing an unintended action.
  4. Test a damaged label and an unknown code using sample records.
  5. On Android, verify camera scanning on the actual browser and device; availability is device-dependent.

Read the result before adding quantity

Check the displayed name, unit and price after scanning Dinner plate. A successful beep means the scanner read characters; it does not prove the selected item, configured price or entered stock is correct. Use a fresh basket when testing Cooking pot so the results are easy to distinguish.

Scanner checks to complete

These checkboxes are a temporary reading aid. Refreshing the page clears them.

Product fit for this business

Use defined whole units and packs. The software is not a complete specialist ERP or double-entry accounting system.

All amounts and product movements on this page are illustrative. The public demo uses sample records. Use an isolated test installation for rehearsal and replace sample prices and counts before real trading.

Try the workflow before choosing your setup

The launch software licence is KES 4,999 once for one business installation, including its branches and tills. Hardware, installation, hosting, support and future upgrades have separate terms. These planning guides do not activate a licence or deploy an installation.
