PRACTICAL POS GUIDE · KENYABarcode scanning for ice cream parlour POS in Kenya
This guide to barcode scanning for ice cream parlour explains the daily checks. Use barcode scanning to select the correct ice cream parlour selling unit. Test Vanilla cup and Chocolate cup separately before relying on a scanner at the counter.
Barcode scanning for ice cream parlour: start with the label, not the scanner
Define a scoop count, cup size or sealed tub as the unit. Keep sealed retail stock separate from served portions.
Assign a code to a defined menu item if it helps selection. Scanning a finished item does not create ingredient deductions or a kitchen ticket.
A scanner acceptance sheet
| Action | Expected result |
|---|---|
| Scan Vanilla cup once | One unit of Vanilla cup, at its configured price |
| Scan Vanilla cup again | Two units of Vanilla cup |
| Scan Chocolate cup | A separate Chocolate cup line |
| Scan an unknown label | Stop and identify the item; do not substitute silently |
| Submit after a test scan | No accidental checkout or duplicate charge |
Set up a practical test
- Connect a compatible scanner that types into the barcode field.
- Focus the barcode field before scanning and check where the characters appear.
- Check the scanner suffix; an Enter key should select the intended item without completing an unintended action.
- Test a damaged label and an unknown code using sample records.
- On Android, verify camera scanning on the actual browser and device; availability is device-dependent.
Read the result before adding quantity
Check the displayed name, unit and price after scanning Vanilla cup. A successful beep means the scanner read characters; it does not prove the selected item, configured price or entered stock is correct. Use a fresh basket when testing Chocolate cup so the results are easy to distinguish.
